Tools your need to paint Ceramic Tiles
  • Tile Primer
  • Gloss Paint
  • Synthetic Brush
  • Bristle Brush
  • Super Fine Sandpaper
  • Lint Free Cloth
  • Dust Sheets
Now you have all these tools you will be able to start painting your ceramic tiles please be aware it might be a good idea to wear some old clothes or overalls as this will prevent any paint from getting on your clothes. Also ensure you leave the paint to dry for a long enough time this is usually around 24 hours but could change depending on the type of ceramic tile paint you’re using.

You will need to prepare your ceramic tiles for painting the first thing to do is to make sure all of the area you’re going to paint is clean this is to ensure your tiles don’t collect dust. Make sure you go around all of the area with a hover and a duster to ensure the whole area is completely clean.

Now you will need to make sure all of your ceramic tiles are completely clean to do this you will need to put some fairy liquid into some hot water and start going over all of the tiles ensuring you wipe over all the tiles once you have done this make sure you dry all of the ceramic tiles properly. You will also need to clean the grout to ensure you have a clean working area you can do this by using a small paint brush which will ensure you can get in all the small tunnels between your ceramic tiles.

If any of your ceramic tiles are damaged you will need to either repair these or replace them depending on how badly damaged they are, if they only need to be repaired you can do this by using the filler which you would have bought previously. If you need to replace the ceramic tiles then please contact your local tile specialist who will be able to give you some more advice on this.

When you have filled all your cracks in on the ceramic tiles you will need to give them long enough to dry so they don’t cause issues for you when you’re looking to paint your tiles this will heavily depend on the tile filler you have bought so make sure you read the instructions on the back of the filler before you apply and think about painting the ceramic tiles.

Now you will need to go about applying your primer this is a small coat of paint which is applied to your ceramic tiles to help the paint take its full colour appearance, this process is usually missed by allot of people but we highly recommend you do follow this process and ensure you let the primer fully dry before you go about painting your ceramic tiles this will make the end result allot better and will result in your tiles looking allot cleaner.

To begin the primer stage of painting your ceramic tiles you will need to use the synthetic brush and apply an even smooth coat over all of your tiles, always ensure you move in one direction it is usually a good idea to do even vertical brush strokes, always ensure if the primer runs you try and catch it and continue your brush strokes this will help ensure your tiles have a smooth coat which won’t look odd when you come to paint your ceramic tiles.

Now you have completely covered all of your ceramic tiles you will need to leave it to dry naturally do not use any tools to try and speed up the process of the drying as this will simply damage your tiles and make the primer dry patchy which will mean you have to start the process again. Ensure you do not add paint to your ceramic tiles until the primer is completely dry this will ensure you have a good chance of making a good coverage on your tiles.

Now your tiles have dried you can begin painting them to do this you will need to take the fine sandpaper and gently rub the ceramic tiles down this will remove any small particles once you have done this over all the area you wish to paint you will need to use a lint free cloth to remove all of the dust.

Now you have done this your tiles should be fairly smooth while this step isn’t 100% needed we do recommend it, we advise everyone they should apply a 2nd coat of tile primer and follow the above few steps again allowing the primer to dry properly now you have done this for the 2nd time you can think about applying paint to your ceramic tiles.

To paint your tiles you will need to follow much of the same process above using even brush strokes to put on a nice coat onto your tiles once you have done this you will need to allow your ceramic tiles to dry before looking to put a gloss on your tiles which will seal them from water and spillages. This can be done like below and will save you allot of time if you spill anything on your tiles in the future.

To gloss all of your ceramic tiles you will need to use the natural brush and apply a nice even coat in the same way you have done for the primer and paint on your ceramic tiles now you have done this you will need to ensure the gloss dries properly it does take allot longer to dry than some off the other stages of the painting. Much like the primer it is advisable to apply at least 2 coats of gloss as this will allow you tiles to become allot more hardwearing.

Depending on gloss you have chosen to use you might need to leave it longer to dry but this will heavily depend on the gloss you have bought to seal your ceramic tiles allot of the manufactures will put these instructions on the back of the pack so ensure you read these before you go about painting your Ceramic Tiles.

If you struggle to get some patches up off the old floor you can use a hairdryer which will heat the glue up and allow you to remove any of the old floor glue. When you have got all the glue up ensure you clean the floor and again remove any dust so you have a good surface to lay floor tiles.

Now you have a clean floor surface you will need to go about filling in any small cracks the floor might have this will just help the new floor tiles stick better.  To do this you will need to use the poly filler now it’s a good idea to use this sparingly and now apply too much as it might make the floor un-even.  Now you have filled in all of the holes you will need to give the floor time to dry this period is usually around 24 hours so leave the floor and come back the following day.

Once the poly filler has fully dried your ready to start cutting your floor tiles, this is one of the hardest things you will have to do when your laying your floor tiles as you will have to ensure you do not cut the floor tiles to small or too big. The below will show you how you can cut all the other materials of floor tiles using your tile cutter. This area of the guide will show you how you can go about cutting ceramic floor tiles with your tile cutter, to begin with you will need to make sure you have a straight line to cut down using the tile tool when you have this you will need to place the floor tile into place.

Once you have done this you will need to be the wheel on the far end of your floor tile and pull the tile cutter handle towards you (remember to wear your safety goggles and gloves when you’re cutting your tile). Press the handle down on the cutter and pull it across the floor tile this will then make the tile cutter cut the floor tile, when you have done this cut the machine off to ensure you do not cause injury to yourself.

This step will show you how you can go about cutting marble floor tiles this process again is very different to other floor tiles and can require other tools so make sure you have the tools before you plan on laying your floor tiles. To cut the marble floor tiles you will need to have a wet saw which will cut the stone in a nice even way make sure you do not force the marble into place as this could damage the stone and result in you breaking some of your floor tiles.

If you have porcelain floor tiles these will again require different tools over the other floor tiles this process is allot easier than cutting some of the stone floor tiles but you will still need some tools so again make sure you have these tools before you look at laying your floor tiles.  You can cut your porcelain floor tiles using either a wet saw or a very good tile cutter now you have your tools simply go about cutting your floor tiles make sure your move slowly ensuring you do not snap the floor tiles and make sure you do not make the floor tiles on the front.

If you need to make various holes within your floor tiles then you can using this using one of two tools the first tool you could look at using to make circle holes within your tiles is the dremel tool which will cut away some holes within your floor tiles the other tools you can use to make holes within your tiles is a wetsaw which will do the same but it can be allot harder to control the area you’re going to cut which could mean a few floor tiles get throw away because you have cut them wrong.

Depending on the size of the hole you need to make within your floor tiles you might need to hire or even buy drilling kits which will allow you to create the ideal hole within your floor tile. To begin with make sure you score your floor tile to ensure you have a nice cut and not a random hole. This part of the cutting process is the hardest as it will take allot of control to ensure your floor tiles are cut correctly and you don’t have to throw any away because you have cut them wrong.
